Types of child care
Daily Nanny:
- Sole charge of small children.
- Qualified and/or experienced.
- Standard hours tend to be Monday to Friday 8.00/8.30am to 6.00/6.30pm.
- Baby sitting is extra.
- Weekends are free. If weekend work is necessary then the nanny should be given time off in lieu.
Live in Nanny:
- Sole charge of small children.
- Qualified and/or experienced.
- Standard hours tend to be Monday to Friday 7.00/8.00am to 6.30/7.30pm.
- Baby sitting is usually 2 nights per week, arranged in advance.
- Weekends are free. If weekend work is necessary then the nanny should be given time off in lieu.
Nanny shares:
- Sole charge of small children from two or more families.
- Qualified and/or experienced.
- Standard hours tend to be Monday to Friday 8.00/8.30am to 6.00/6.30pm.
- Baby sitting is extra.
- Weekends are free. If weekend work is necessary then the nanny should be given time in lieu.
* Please note we do not recommend that Nannies look after two young babies from different families unless they have experience in this area.
Mother's/father's help:
- Help for the parent who shares the care of the children with the Nanny. If the parent leaves the children it is usually only for short periods of time.
- Often non qualified, with or without experience.
- Standard hours tend to be Monday to Friday 8.00/8.30am to 6.00/6.30pm.
- Baby sitting is extra.
- Weekends are free. If weekend work is necessary then the nanny should be given time off in lieu.
Housekeeper:
- Runs the house, including cleaning, cooking, ironing, shopping and any personal services the family may require e.g. party planning, holiday organisation.
- Live in/live out.
- Work flexible hours, Monday – Friday, 9.00 – 5.00 (approximately). Some housekeepers will work weekends but this is usually regarded as extra.
- Will help with child care responsibilities.
Maternity Nurse:
- Temporary placement i.e. 4-6 weeks.
- Qualified Nursery Nurse or Nurse with experience.
- Usually works on a 24 hour availability service 6/7 days per week.
Nanny/Mother's help/Housekeeper:
- Combines running the house and child care, usually not in sole charge of the children on a full time basis.
- Can be live in or live out.
- Work flexible hours, usually no more that 8/9 hours per day.
Proxy parent:
- In the parents' absence, takes 24 hour sole charge of the children.
- Has complete responsibility for the home.
- Live in, temporary position.
