happy holidays by Lara aged 4

Working hours
Housekeepers generally work from 9.00 - 5.00, but this can vary depending on the family's specific needs. Any extra time requirements must be negotiated in advance.

Days off
Housekeepers work a 5 day week, usually Monday- Friday. However, variations should be discussed during the interview.

Vacations
Under the 1998 Working Time Regulations, Housekeepers are entitled to a minimum of 4 weeks' paid holiday per year, to be taken at mutually agreed times. It is customary for time off to be given for Bank Holidays, or for additional payment to be made if time off is not suitable

House work

  • Laundry (wash and iron)
  • Clean and tidy house
  • Shopping
  • Cooking
  • House hold errands
  • Other tasks which have been agreed upon in advance
  • Child care if agreed
  • Party planning, holiday organisation, etc.

Financial arrangements

  • The date upon which the Housekeeper receives his/her wages must be agreed during the interview. Money for trips or extras should also be discussed; a 'kitty' is regarded as the easiest way or handling this.
  • As an employer you are required to pay tax and national insurance for the person you employ.
  • A Housekeeper cannot be self employed.
  • Inland Revenue Enquiry Officials provide special simplified documentation for employers of Housekeepers.( See links page for further information)
  • As an employer you should ensure you have employers and public liability insurance cover.( See links page for further information)
  • If the Housekeeper is to have use of a car ensure it is appropriately insured.
Benefit packages
Benefit packages should be mutually agreed at the interview. Many Housekeepers insist that the family pays their yearly child care insurance if they are involved in the care of children. ( See links page for further information)
-->Click here if you would like to see our links page.
Medical insurance is by no means essential but many Housekeepers like to have it provided for them.

Accomodation ( Only for live in Housekeepers)
A separate bedroom is essential and many Housekeepers request their own bathroom. Live in Housekeepers also like to have facilities to make drinks in their own room, although all other food should be provided.
