Working Hours
Nannies generally work 10-12 hours/day, but this can vary depending on the family's specific needs. Any extra time requirements must be negotiated with the child carer in advance.
Days off
Nannies work a 5 day week, usually Monday-
Friday. However, variations should be discussed during the interview.
Vacations
Under the 1998 Working Time Regulations, Nannies are entitled to a minimum of 4 weeks' paid holiday per year, to be taken at mutually agreed times. It is customary for time off to be given for Bank Holidays, or for additional payment to be made if care is required at these times.
Light house work
- Children's Laundry (wash and iron)
- Clean and tidy children's bedroom(s)
- Wash up after children's meals
- Put toys away after children
- Shop for children's food
- Other tasks which have been agreed upon in advance
Financial arrangements
- The date upon which the Nanny receives his/her wages must be agreed during the interview. Money for trips or extras should also be discussed; a 'kitty' is regarded as the easiest way or handling this.
- As an employer you are required to pay tax and national insurance for the person you employ.
- A nanny cannot be self employed.
- Inland Revenue Enquiry Officials provide special simplified documentation for employers of nannies.( See links page for further information)
- As an employer you should ensure you have employers and public liability insurance cover.( See links page for further information)
- If the nanny is to have use of a car ensure it is appropriately insured.
Benefit packages
Benefit packages should be mutually agreed at the interview. Many nannies insist that the family pays their yearly child care insurance.
Medical insurance is by no means essential but many nannies like to have it provided for them. ( See links page for further information)

Travel
Most nannies like to travel with the family they work with, but this should be discussed at the interview.
*Note that a separate room must always be provided.
Accomodation ( Only applicable for live in Nannies)
A separate bedroom is essential and many nannies request their own bathroom. Live in nannies also like to have facilities to make drinks in their own room, although all other food should be provided.
